Series of four articles in which Kuyper condemned the violent reaction of the liberal authorities to the Palingoproer (ET: Eel riot). During the riots, which were not inherently socialist (they arose because the police had banned a form of public entertainment, involving living eels, which was therefore seen as animal abuse), socialist symbols were displayed. People carried red flags, sang socialist songs, and built barricades in the streets. Twenty-six people died when police and army units intervened in the riots. After the riots, the liberals accused the socialists of having organized the riots and arrested some socialists. In the articles Kuyper argued that the liberals had become authoritarian. In the third article, Kuyper defended the socialists’ right to organize and spread their ideas, even though he fiercely opposed their ideas.
